Sahur Roti John @ Jalan Datuk Koyah 10050 Penang....

View all 6 photos...
Wonderful!! At 5am in the morning, we managed to find a wicked Roti John unlike anything we've seen in Klang Valley. Originally it was an effort to find Nasi Kandaq. To our surprise our familiar "Line Clear" joint was closed.

We settled down with this small kiosk by the roadside by the name of Gerai Makanan Noordin exactly opposite of D'Kayu Restaurant at Penang Road. It was brilliant. We wud recommend anybody and evrybody to try this. 2 sunny side up eggs on a toast bread layered with curried minced beef.. a view to be reckon with!! Enjoy more photos after the jump.

Selain daripada Roadwalk, Nasi Kandaq, Padang Kota and Komtaq.... memang laaa tak sah kalau tak pi makan kat Padang Brom. Tahun ni Mama tak ikut sebab letih sangat beraya kot.

Kat Padang Brom ni best Mee Rebus, Mee Goreng and Pasemboq. Tapi sebab kenyang sangat beraya siang tadi... we settle dengan mee and koayteow goreng je... Have a look laaa. Nyum Nyum
For those yang tak penah pi... dia betul2 kat belakang Balai Polis Dato' Keramat off Perak Road. Dah dekat sangat dah dengah Road Walk.

Beside the great Nasi Kandar, Penang has another delicious surprise. The Mee Goreng Mamak.
Yes, we can find it at almost all mamak stalls or restaurants throughout Malaysia, but the Penang ersion is simply outstanding. Whenever I eat mee goreng at most mamak outlets, I realise the taste of 'kicap' is too much and seem normal to everyone. I also noticed that some mamak added in too much vegetable. Most of the time 'sayur kobis'! I wonder, why not just call it 'sayur goreng' instead of mee goreng? It's okay to use kicap or vegetables in mee goreng, but excessively are just not my taste. So, when we were in Penang, father took us to Padang Brom (Padang Brown).

It is located right behind the Datuk Keramat police station. Padang Brom has a food court and there were 2 mee goreng stalls, Mohabbat & Ghani. They are operated at night only (approx 6pm to 12am). So, we did try both. The first night was the Mee Goreng Ghani. Very good taste and make us order another plate. We really appreciate the delicious experience.

The second night, we went to Mohabbat. Good taste but with more quantity. I preferred the Ghani but Mohabbat was too good too. Mohabbat served us with bigger quantity and make me hard to decide a winner. Finally, I can only made up a conclusion, which is also a suggestion. If we go to Penang and wanna eat good mee goreng, go to Padang Brom. If we are very-very hungry, go to Mohabbat, and if we just wanna try the good taste of Penang Mee Goreng Mamak, go for Ghani!

The Original Nasi Kandar Part V - Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang.

Masjid Kapitan Keling!
The Original Nasi Kandar Part V - Do U think that all good nasi kandar in Penang only available for breakfast? Nope, not actually! In Penang, we can have nasi kandar for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even supper! I did it all in one day before, but I end up in the toilet twice on that day. Not because of diarrhoea or food poisoning, but just too much food processed in a single day.

Alhamdulillah, despite having stall nasi kandar everyday for the whole week, I didn't fall ill at all. These nasi kandar operators know what cleanliness is all about. Their business place may look messy, but they normally serve good food. I dont want to guarantee that as accident may happen, anywhere... The nasi kandar at Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (Pitt Street), Penang, is more popular at night. U will see lesser customers during the day, but many at night.

The stall is hidden in a little lorong next to the Masjid Kapitan Keling. But dont worry, U are not going to miss it! Some goldsmiths across the street told me that it has 2 cooks. That mean 2 versions, wow! But the night version looks more popular. And, I did try the popular one. It was superb as the previous 4. Now, I realize that the original nasi kandars are only available at stalls. Not at the big restaurants that attract customers with fried chickens, comfort & astro. For once again, I was talking about nasi kandar, it's the rice that we should appreciate! Try it, enjoy it & good luck!

Nasi Kandaq @ Dhobi Ghaut Penang

View all 12 photos...
Another posting on Nasi Kandaq @ Dhobi Ghaut!!

Everybody loves Nasi Kandaq!!!

Some like it with Fish, Some like it with chicken, some like it with beef and some like it with various squid, prawn, hati, limpa anda all.

As for me Curry Fish and a hard-boiled egg is enough. Now Nasi Kandaq is overly commercialised. U can have yr plate of Nasi Kandaq all over the country at various mamak restaurant. In Klang valley franchised nasi Kandaq came in various brand, Pelita, Kayu Nasi Kandaq, D'Kayu Nasi Kandaq (eh macam Sri Raju vs Sri Raaju laaa pulak!!), Syed Restaurant, Subaidah, Langkapuri, Khalifah dan macam macam lagi. Lotus pun dah ada Nasi Kandaq takde Halal Jakim!

To me, they just cannot beat a plain roadside nasi Kandaq stall in Penang. Maybe it is just me but I certainly confirmed all the above brands in KL could not even come close for the one I hv in Penang.
Plse kindly find the photos for my Nasi Kandaq tribute to all Nasi Kandaq followers all over the world!! Sluurp slurp... terlioq la pulak!!

The Original Nasi Kandar Part IV - Line Clear, Penang.

Sorry, sah termakan sikit baru ambik gambar...
The Original Nasi Kandar (Part IV). The tour for the real nasi kandar continues... This time, I overslept & didn't wake up early, but luckily my father was aware about my nasi kandar addiction. So, he brought back few 'bungkus' from a stall once famous for it's nasi kandar.

The Line Clear, located in the heart of Penang Road. Open 24 hours. To be strategic, it is in a small lorong between shophouses, just after the junction joining Chulia Street & Penang Road. And to make its survival tougher, Line Clear is today at the opposite of a commercialize nasi kandar restaurant, D'Kayu.

Eventhough I only ate Line Clear nasi kandar (bungkus) at home, I still enjoyed it bcoz the curry has completely mixed with the rice. In malay, "kari & nasi dah sebati". For some people, they'll love it this way. The period from the moment my nasi kandar was wrapped, till the time I ate it, makes perfect mixture between rice & curry. But my wife dont really like it as she said,"nasi dah kembang..."
